It wouldn't take much legal maneuvering to combine those two rulings with our version of freedom of speech to tell the crtc and the libs to fuck off all the way to china

  • Canadian here, I believe the original point of how "Canadian" something had to be was because we were trying to keep some cultural identity for ourselves and not just be amalgamated into the U.S. For example, American broadcast company's have way more money and would easily be able to buy showtime for American T.V shows, and commercials which would muscle out Canadian shows and commercials. So, this was meant as a way to ensure Canadians are able to compete with Americans in Canada. Not saying there isn't abuse with the system, Just the original premise.

  • Bill C-10 plays into my previous two comments. When they say "Canadian Sovereignty", again they mean giving Canadians the help they need to tell their stories and share their culture. It does not mean censoring foreign content (American). It just means that if you produce content in Canada, you have to pay a type of tax so that our creators get a fair shake. All this talk of free speech and censorship is a 'nothing burger'. North Americans are not oppressed. If you want to to say hurtful, nasty things on the internet no one will stop you. You'll just be shunned... or cancelled (dumb) and Jeremy will have less to talk about. Besides, the bill clearly states online content is not considered 'production'. Production is broadcast or film production. So if you're worried about the Canadian government combing the internet to censor things they don't like you saying, lol... FIstart, Facebook and Twitter already do that, dummies! The government has better things to do.

  • The Heritage Fund is a pool of money that large creative corporations pay into to help fund smaller projects. This is so up and coming creators have access to funds they can apply for to help tell their stories. This is a fabulous resource and has helped many people break into the film industry in Canada, including marginalized and under served groups. I just worked on a short film that was funded by this program.

  • The CRTC is a government body designed to protect Canadian jobs by enforcing a standard amount of Canadian content. So what's considered Canadian? Basically anything that is produced in Canada, whether that be fully Canadian written and produced stories or American projects hiring Canadian crew. It also protects local news organizations whom without the CRTC would not exist as local news is a losing business. The CRTC mandates that companies that hold a television broadcast license (local channels, not specialty) serve Canadians by offering local news. As a person who worked in broadcast for over 20 years, trust me... no company wants to pay to produce the news. They only do it because of the CRTC.

What ive learned is if the word " heritage" is used .... it will not be good. Most bills are passed as 'omnibus ' which include multiple . Ie: Bill omnibus bill addressing cannabis, vaping and bus safety. This is how the Canadian govt works. Of course bus safety is a concern so that is what got the bill pushed through. .... crazy..

It protect consumers and companies that create scammy sells (cellphone, television, internet, etc.) get totally wrecked by them. That said, yes the point system is weird and can be badly used. But trust me when I say that it has been ENORMOUSLY beneficial to us, despite some weirdness. • Wow, you completely missed the point of this law. First off, this law has existed for decades. Before the internet. Here is why. We reside next to the largest producer of media content on the planet. America. If Canadian content had to try to counter the advertising purchasing power, and exposure of the US networks, our many talented artists (some of the best in the world) would never be heard from. American content would completely dominate our airwaves exclusively. We aren't Americans. We have our own culture that we see as valuable even if you don't. A culture that should be represented in our media. If you see that as insidious, you have been living in America too long. The articles you are reading from, are posted by hard core right wing publications that would say water is dry if Trudeau said it was wet. Our version of Ted Cruz. Wait..he IS Canadian! 😂😂

On the other hand, there is the issue that certain online platforms decided to ban active political figures. While certain pro-monopolistic Democrats might applaud this censorious/cancerous action, other politicians around the world took pause. So if a channel wants to be included in a Canadian cable package, it needs to invest in purchasing Canadian created content. That's not what is creepy about bill C-10, it's the fact they removed the exception for user uploaded content, and imply they have the right to remove user generated content. I.e. why was it important enough to include up front, then removed after rounds in parliament.

Unfortunately it's happening throughout the Western world I am Canadian and I cannot stand watching my nightly news because it's actually worse than CNN and MSNBC. All the neoliberals do is dictate to the public they stopped working for the people 40 years ago they've learned to take Federal money and prop up their organizations to put the foot on the neck of every Canadian

    Carl LitoCarl Lito10 päivää sitten
  • Canadian here, we don't actually have free speech here, you also don't have the right to defend yourself believe it or not. Our legal system is honestly a complete joke and we're all aware of it. However the organization in question over sees what is called Canadian content law, where radio stations and tv stations based in Canada need to play a certain percentage of "Canadian content" so basically you get a lot of rush, guess who and tragically hip on the radio, etc. What this law is trying to do is massively extend the reach of this organization (and therefore the reach of the government) to a much much wider range, that could; based on some of the language in the bill could allow them to censor a lot. From what I understand it wouldn't be able to do much about content coming into Canada since we've always had international media coming in. What this bill can do is possibly censor Canadians and what they post, like if i make a video and post it on FIstart, the government doesn't like it, they can take it down and possibly pursue further action against me, that's what I understand the basic worry to be with some of the language used in this bill. But yes it's something very very scary that we all need to be worried about. Our PM has literally come out and said he "admires" the CCP. So that should tell you everything you need to know.

    TsuzukuTsuzuku10 päivää sitten

    • @wais_45 I agree 100% that Canadian content should be preserved and appreciated. We have the best comedians hands down, and some solid musical acts. But if its good, it should be able to stand on its own merit and not need government regulation to be seen/heard But trust me when I say American companies will happily pull out of Canada if they don't think it's worth it, look at target and many other franchises that tried to come into the Canadian market? They pulled up stakes and just left when things weren't working for them, so where i could see companies like Netflix having an issue is, that from my understanding content law requires a certain percentage to be Canadian, Netflix would have to limit other content on the Canadian platform to adhere to that policy, having less American/Japanese/Hindi/Korean media that they offer currently. which could impact their bottom line overall with subscribers leaving due to lack of stuff they actually want to watch. and like i said, with a market of less than 40 mill(maybe 10 million actual subscribers) its hardly worth it to do the juggling act. Companies like that are willing to play by China's crazy rules because the market is 1.6 billion, it's worth it for them. And honestly both sides are the political isle are two sides of the same coin as far as I'm concerned. Both sides are willing to lie and spread nonsense to try and get their way. It's honestly sad the state of affairs we;re in right now. Liberal, conservative, whatever we're all Canadians and we have somehow elected incompetence across the board and we're all suffering for it :(

      TsuzukuTsuzuku9 päivää sitten
    • @Tsuzuku To be honest the CRTC isn’t perfect and I’m definitely not arguing against that, but preserving, protecting and promoting Canadian content over other countries is important. There’s nothing wrong with regulating these American companies since they’re trying to enter our markets. This is a fair trade off that they’re willing to do, they’re not going to abandon the Canadian market. Generally speaking, the Liberals always shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to controversy, but the Conservatives will lie and spin conspiracy theories for days. Just look at the comment section right now, most of these people are Conservatives spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories.

      wais_45wais_459 päivää sitten
    • Firstly, I think the removal of the clause Jeremy was talking about contradicts them simply "saying" that;s not what they're after. And secondly, as has been discussed before in this country regarding Netflix and Canadian content law, applying it to services like that isn't going to fly, Netflix has the option to just say screw it and stop selling its services in Canada if it doesn't want to deal with the regulation. We're only a market of just under 40 million people, barely even the population of some states in the US, they aren't making that much money off of us. If they want more Canadian content, Canada needs to start making better content that can make it to these platforms on its own merit, not receive a hand up from the government so we can be forced to tolerate the absolute shit the CBC turns out for TV entertainment. So either way this bill is a waste of everyone time and money and will only end up causing more problems than it fixes. You don't think that language is designed to be murky and hard for people to understand on purpose? That's what they do when they want to sneak things in. Like when they tried to sneakily give our finance mistier unrestricted control over the budget at the start of the pandemic, just slipped it it amongst all that stimulus stuff. Thankfully people caught it and squashed it before it could pass. The Liberals do this shit alllllllll the time

      TsuzukuTsuzuku9 päivää sitten
    • They made it clear that this bill is not subjected to regular Canadians uploading content to FIstart, Facebook, and so on. Only companies are subjected to bill C-10's regulation. The bill is also making online streaming companies (Netflix, Crave, Spotify, and so on) regulated by the CRTC so they're required to support Canadian content and creators. The wording of the bill, if not examined closely, could be seen as problematic, but all of these hyperbolic and untrue statements that this bill is trying to regulate and lock up regular Canadians is not factually correct.
